OUR Story

China Care Brown was established in 2004 by Andrew Puschel and Kyle Wood (both Brown University ’05) to address the plight of China’s orphans. The student-led organization includes students from Brown University and the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD). We work to raise funds and awareness to help better the lives of orphaned children in China through our partnership with the non-profit OneSky Foundation. China Care Brown originally began as an organization that met the needs of adoptive families and their children who went through the process of international adoptions as a result of China's One Child Policy that lasted from 1980 to 2016. In 2021, China Care Brown expanded to all families and children who want to celebrate Chinese heritage.

China Care proudly provides a platform for connecting youth in the local Rhode Island and Southern Massachusetts area with student mentors at Brown & RISD. China Care Brown hosts a variety of Chinese cultural programs: Mentorship, Language and Cultural Lessons, and Fundraisers.

OUr mission

Since 2004, China Care Brown has worked closely with the China Care Foundation to fund surgeries for medically needy orphans. Beginning in 2011, we began to work with the OneSky Foundation to continue our mission to raise awareness and fund orphan surgeries. China Care Brown has donated over $86,000 to these programs to fund 41 orphan surgeries since 2005.

In addition, China Care Brown aims to foster an inclusive and nurturing environment for Chinese-American and Chinese-adoptees where children can explore their intersectional identities in a fun and educational way. This aspiration informs all aspects of China Care Brown.
