CHINA CARE BROWN
PROGRAMS
WHAT WE OFFER
In addition to fundraising and our work with adoption awareness, China Care Brown offers a strong local component that connects Brown and RISD students with Chinese adoptees through cultural programs, activities, festivals, and dinners. All members are undergraduate or graduate students committed to help adoptees in American families, as well as orphans in China.
MENTORSHIP
WHO: Mentees have an opportunity to be matched with a Brown or RISD student during our one-on-one mentoring sessions.
WHAT: Mentoring sessions are centered around Chinese culture and include activities such as arts & crafts, games, and storytelling. Mentees will have one-on-one time with their assigned mentors in addition to group activities where everybody can socialize!
WHERE: Prior to the pandemic, meetings took place on the Brown University campus. Due to social distancing measures and school policy, current sessions are led by mentors on Zoom, but we hope to return to in-person meetings by Fall 2021!
WHEN: Each monthly meeting lasts 1.5-2 hours.
FOR ELEMENTARY AND MIDDLE SCHOOLERs
The China Care Brown mentorship program fosters strong and enriching one-on-one relationships between university student mentors and mentees. Monthly mentorship meetings last for 1.5 - 2 hours each and feature cultural activities with arts & crafts as well as fun and games. The main goal of our mentorship program is to raise awareness of and appreciation for Chinese culture, language, and heritage.
Mentorship is divided into two groups according to the mentee’s age: elementary school group (grades 1-5) and middle school group (grades 6-8). Each group helps mentors and mentees cultivate a shared sense of Chinese cultural awareness and appreciation.
In conjunction with our mentorship program, Chinese language & culture lessons (also led by university students) are offered to our mentees as well as mentee families.
Chinese lessons
WHO: Everyone (including family members!) have the opportunity to enroll in Chinese language lessons taught by native-level/university-trained tutors.
WHAT: We offer group and one-on-one lessons (both free) centered around Chinese culture and language. Our lesson plans and curriculum are designed by Brown University students, and can be adjusted to fit students’ level of knowledge/language.
WHERE: Prior to the pandemic, lessons took place on the Brown University campus. Due to social distancing measures and school policy, current sessions are led by tutors on Zoom, but we hope to return to in-person lessons by Fall 2021!
WHEN: Chinese language classes are typically held in conjunction with our monthly mentoring sessions (before or after), but can also be scheduled according to your time!
